251 Million People Are Gaming on Facebook, Up 35 Million From ...

Some 35 million more people are playing games on Facebook today compared to a year ago, the social network has revealed.

In September 2012, 251 million people played games on Facebook, up from 226 million in September of 2011. That growth is attributed primarily to the thing Facebook is best at: social.

?When you sign up for a social game where only one or two of your friends are playing, it?s not as fun as if 10 to 20 of your friends are playing, ? said Facebook?s Alex Shultz, during a private press event Thursday.

Games grow on the network in five ways: via App Center, Notifications, News Feed, Timeline, and games users have Bookmarked to play later on. Seeing in the App Center that five of your friends are playing a game, for example, tends to make you you want to try the game out too.

Across gaming on the platform the social network says it?s starting to see a few key trends emerge, particularly the quality and diversity. Once a place for fairly simple games, games on the platform are getting better and better and more complex.

Those games are getting more diverse ? both in genre, and in the location they come from.

The most popular genre of game being played on Facebook today? Simulation. Second place goes to Arcade and Puzzle games, a category that has seen significant growth over the past year.

Games like SongPop, an online version of Name That Tune, are seeing astounding growth.

?The amount of volume of guessing is extraordinary,? says Shultz. ?When I first saw them I thought there was a bug in the system?

Mobile, now a huge focus for Facebook as a whole, is also a major focus for games. Eight of the top 10 iOS games are currently integrated on Facebook, and games such as SongPop and Words With Friends can be played by gamers on mobile or via Facebook on the web ? opening the door to more and more players.

So where does Facebook see gaming going from here?

Long-term, it sees Strategy games growing on the platform. In the next year there are a host of titles making a splash on the social network, such as the Wizard of Oz and CityVille 2 on Facebook.com, with Hay Day and NFL Pro 2013 on mobile.

Do you play games on Facebook? Where do you see Facebook gaming this time next year? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.

Lewis Hamilton believes Narain Karthikeyan's move to Force India ...

Lewis Hamilton believes Narain Karthikeyan?s move to Force India can do wonders ? Formula 1 news

McLaren driver Lewis Hamilton has said that Narain Karthikeyan?s move to Force India can do wonders as he is presently driving a slower car in HRT.

Karthikeyan has not been able to score even a single point in this season so far and is currently standing at 24th place in the drivers? championship. Moreover, he is ahead of his teammate, Pedro de la Rosa and is behind Charles Pic of Marussia.

Hamilton has said that unfortunately the Indian driver has not been able to drive a competitive car until now due to which he has not secured any good results.

Nevertheless, he thinks that the Karthikeyan has got the talent and can surprise everyone if he would be given a chance in the Silverstone based team which has been considered as one of the most capable mid-field contenders in this year?s championship.

Furthermore, he said that move to a better team can prove out to be a very good step for the 35-year-old in his career ahead.

?It is unfortunate that Narain is driving a slow car. Probably, it would do wonders if he were in Force India which is a pretty good team. It would be a good stepping stone for him,? said Hamilton here Wednesday when asked about the current HRT driver racing for an Indian team.?

Besides, the 2008 world champion said that he has been a part of his home team for a long time and they have achieved so much together. Therefore, he insisted that it can be the same case for the Indian if he moves from the Madrid based team to Force India.

?I am a Brit driving for a British team in a British car and it has done wonders for us so I hope it would be the same for him and India.?

However, it is to be noted that the British driver has planned to leave the Woking based team after this season and has signed a new contract with Mercedes for 2013.

It will be interesting to see how all the contenders show up in the coming years as there are many changes expected in the next year?s driver line-up of the teams.

New York Times Digital Subscription Growth Doesn't Offset Ad Sales Slump

[More from Mashable: Glocal Wants to Be the Hulu of Local News Videos]

The New York Times Co.'s digital subscriptions business continues to grow at a steady pace, but it's not enough to offset bigger declines in advertising revenue at The New York Times, The Boston Globe and The International Herald Tribune, the company indicated in its third-quarter earnings statement released Thursday.

Collectively, the three papers added approximately 83,000 digital subscribers in the third quarter, bringing the total number of subscribers to 592,000, an 11% increase from last quarter. The bulk of those new subscriptions -- 57,000 of them -- were purchased from The Times and IHT.

[More from Mashable: Mashable Media Summit Tickets Will Sell Out Soon]

Both print and digital advertising revenues continued to decline at 10.9% and 2.2%, respectively, resulting in an 8.9%, drop in overall ad revenue "largely due to the challenging economic environment, ongoing secular trends and an increasingly complex and fragmented digital advertising marketplace," the Times Co. said. Its real estate classifieds were the hardest hit, dropping nearly 20% year-over-year. Digital advertising now makes up nearly a quarter of total Company advertising revenues, up a few percentage points from the same period a year ago.

Circulation revenues increased 7.4%, thanks to increases in digital subscription sales and print subscription pricing for the Times and the Globe. The Company decided to erect metered paywalls around its news websites in late 2011 in an attempt to offset foreseeable declines in advertising revenues with gains in circulation revenues.

Total revenues declined 0.6% to $449 million year-over-year. Net income was $2.28 million, or 2 cents per share -- an 85.4% drop from the third quarter of 2011, when the Times Co. sold off a number of investments. Operating profit declined 59.6% to $8.51 million year-over-year.

Shares of the Times Co. were trading down 13.5% to $9.20 late Thursday morning.

The Company is expected to welcome new CEO Mark Thompson on Nov. 12, but some -- including New York Times public editor Margaret Sullivan -- are questioning whether Thompson's offer should be revoked because of a sexual abuse scandal that occurred under his watch at the BBC.

Timing is everything: Hormone use may reduce or increase Alzheimer's disease risk in women

ScienceDaily (Oct. 24, 2012) ? A new study suggests that women who begin taking hormone therapy within five years of menopause may reduce their risk of developing Alzheimer's disease. The research is published in the October 24, 2012, online issue of Neurology?, the medical journal of the American Academy of Neurology.

"This has been an area of debate because observational studies have shown a reduced risk of Alzheimer's disease with hormone therapy use, while a randomized controlled trial showed an increased risk. Our results suggest that there may be a critical window near menopause where hormone therapy may possibly be beneficial," said study author Peter P. Zandi, PhD, with Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. "On the other hand, if started later in life, hormone therapy could be associated with an increased risk of developing Alzheimer's disease."

For the study, researchers followed 1,768 women ages 65 and older for 11 years. The women provided a history of their hormone therapy use and the date at which menopause began. A total of 1,105 women had used hormone therapy, consisting of estrogen alone or in combination with a progestin. During the study, 176 women developed Alzheimer's disease dementia, including 87 of the 1,105 women who had taken hormone therapy compared to 89 of the 663 others.

The study found that women who began hormone therapy within five years of menopause had a 30-percent lower risk of Alzheimer's dementia than those who had not used hormone therapy. The risk was unchanged among other hormone users who had begun treatment more than five years after menopause, but a higher risk of dementia was observed among women who had started a combined therapy of estrogen and progestin when they were at least 65 years old.

"While this well-designed study supports the possibility that short-term hormone use may reduce the risk of Alzheimer's disease, more research is needed before we can make new clinical recommendations for women and their use of hormone therapy," said Victor Henderson, MD, MS, with Stanford University in Stanford, Calif., and a Fellow of the American Academy of Neurology, who wrote an accompanying editorial.

The study was supported by the National Institute on Aging.

Will Barca overlook Celtic?

A Champions League match in Russia means Tuesday will have an early kickoff, though with no points through two rounds, Spartak?s provided little more to the tournament than staggered start times. Their early match against Benfica isn?t technically a must win, but it?s difficult to see how Spartak get out of Group G with a loss.

The game in Moscow is the day?s opening act, with Barcelona-Celtic ? Group G?s other match ? part of the seven-match slate that kicks off at 2:45 p.m. Eastern.

Spartak Moscow (Russia) vs. Benfica (Portugal)

Luzhniki Stadium, Moscow, 11:00 a.m. Eastern

Spartak is in a mini-crisis, having lost three matches in a row for the first time since 2009. That may not sound so horrible, but there are a few augmenting factors:

  • Because of the international break, the losing streak means Spartak haven?t won since Sept. 29.
  • Once of the losses was a huge derby match with CSKA Moscow, a match Spartak lost 2-0.
  • Another was an embarrassing Champions League loss to Celtic, the game which looked like Spartak?s most likely victory when tournament groups were drawn.
  • This being Unai Emery?s first season as head coach, an early downturn naturally raises doubts about his fitness for the job.

That?s part of the reason Emery?s labeled Tuesday?s match as ?crucial,? though that status has as much to do with tournament implications as it does mounting pressure. Having lost their first two games of the competition, it may be now or never time for Spartak, particularly considering they?re facing Benfica (the team directly above them in the standings). Another home loss and every other Group G team will be (at least) four points ahead of Spartak.

Benfica have their own reasons for urgency, sitting on one point after two rounds. They failed to take advantage of a Celtic team that couldn?t manage a shot on target, and while nobody expected them to win their second match (against Barcelona), they remain without a win or a goal.

Coach Jorge Jesus doesn?t seem concerned. While, like Emery, he conceded the match was very important to Benfica?s chance to finish second (nobody?s even faking a chance of besting Barcelona), Jesus also hinted at a wait-and-see approach. He expects Spartak to play desperately and take chances. He?ll adjust his tactics accordingly.

Read between the lines, and we may again see a Benfica team that?s more concerned with the other team?s attack than their own. While that makes sense for a team on the road in Champions League, at some point Benfica is going to have to be more proactive. If they?re waiting for the right place and time, they could return to Lisbon in fourth in their group.

From Spartak head coach Unai Emery:

?The coaching staff has conducted an internal review and we have an understanding and appreciation of why we have been losing.?

From Benfica head coach Jorge Jesus:

? The game is very important, because there are three teams battling for second place in the group. If we manage to get a good result, then it will be just us and Celtic bidding for that second qualification spot.?

UEFA Preview

Barcelona (Spain) vs. Celtic (Scotland)

Camp Nou, Barcelona, 2:45 p.m. Eastern

Sitting on four points, Celtic is one of the surprises of the tournament, though their results require some explanation if we?re trying to assess the Bhoys? quality. Celtic had more points than shots on goal after their draw with Benfica in Glasgow, and although they took an early look in Moscow, they needed a dismissal and an own goal to turn a 2-1 deficit into a 3-2 win. Neil Lennon deserves credit for getting Celtic into a position to compete for the knockout round, but it?s unclear his side is much better than a team picked to finish last in this group.

We?re unlikely to get any clarity on Tuesday. Celtic are huge underdogs to Barcelona, though a loss wouldn?t damage their chances at second place. None of Braga, Celtic, or Spartak expected any points from Bar?a. Any result they get from the group favorites will be considered a bonus.

For Barcelona, focus will be the primary concern. Though they?re big favorites against Celtic, they can?t take anything for granted, as their matchday one struggles against Spartak showed. Late in the Russians? visit to Camp Nou, Spartak held a 2-1 lead before a Lionel Messi double lifted Barcelona to victory. Coming off three weekend goals, Messi?s certainly in the right form to replicate that output, but if Bar?a comes into this match prepared, he won?t need to.

From Barcelona head coach Tito Vilanova:

?Maybe people didn?t take Celtic seriously at the start of the season, but we do ? Celtic?s pace and the fact that they have tall players for set pieces are what worry me the most about them.?

From Celtic manager Neil Lennon:

? We?re not here on holiday or for the tourist attractions ? We can try to stop balls reaching Messi. Better teams and better coaches than myself have tried to stop him and failed, so we shall see what we can do.?

Analysis: Canada's tough stance on foreign buyers won't cut oil growth

NEW YORK (Reuters) - In other energy-rich countries, a decision to knock back a major foreign investment would likely provoke cries of resource nationalism and raise questions about prospects for oil and gas production growth.

Canada's surprise move last week to block Malaysian state-run oil firm Petronas' $5.2 billion bid for Calgary-based Progress Energy has spooked some investors, and raised concerns that Chinese state firm CNOOC's $15.2 billion bid for Calgary-based Nexen may also be rejected.

Yet even if Canada sets steeper hurdles for foreign takeovers of its energy firms, few analysts expect that to stall development of new oil and gas fields that could nearly double Canada's output over the next 25 years.

For one explanation, just look south.

For CNOOC, the Petronas episode serves as a reminder of its own failed $18.5 billion bid in 2005 for California-based oil firm Unocal. U.S. lawmakers thwarted that deal on national security concerns, drawing ire from Beijing.

That deal's collapse reshaped China's investment strategy -- shifting its focus, at least in developed countries, to joint ventures for oil and gas development after 2005, rather than bold corporate takeovers. But that did little to crimp huge production gains in the U.S. oil and gas patch, where China's companies continue to invest heavily.

"There are other avenues for investment for foreign firms in Canada," says Pavel Molchanov, an energy analyst at Raymond James.

"The United States has had a de facto block on large foreign M&A deals in the energy sector since 2005, yet U.S. oil and gas production has been growing in leaps and bounds. The same would likely happen in Canada."

Undeterred, Chinese state-owned energy firms started pouring cash into North America, announcing deals to acquire oil and gas assets in the region worth nearly $40 billion since 2008, investment consultancy Dealogic says.

Even CNOOC has re-entered the U.S. market. In 2010, it pledged to invest $2.2 billion to share in production of shale oil and gas from Texas with Chesapeake Energy Corp.

In Canada, energy-hungry Asian firms covet a major role developing the world's third-largest oil reserves. Several state-controlled Chinese firms have already invested billions in the country since 2009, although CNOOC's proposed takeover of Calgary-based Nexen is the largest planned investment yet.

A CNOOC spokesman in Canada, Peter Hunt, said the firm's application to buy Nexen is "proceeding normally," and the company still expects the deal to close this year. CNOOC declined further comment.

Canada has given Malaysia's Petronas 30 days to re-submit an offer to buy Progress, after the government questioned whether the transaction would benefit Canadians.

CANADIAN CROSSROADS

Now in question is whether foreign takeovers of Canada's firms can meet vague criteria laid out in a 1985 law, the Canada Investment Act, which says foreign-led buyouts worth more than $299 million must bring a "net benefit" for the country.

Canada requires more than $200 billion in energy investment to nearly double its production, which could sharply boost exports to Asia.

The Conservative Party government, led by Prime Minister Stephen Harper, is the ultimate arbiter on any given deal. He has made exports to Asia a national priority, and was given a warm welcome in Beijing earlier this year.

But at home, some Canadian officials question whether foreign takeovers will create jobs for Canadians, speed infrastructure spending or help Canada's companies get their own buyouts of assets in China approved by regulators there.

Canada's government is now working towards setting clear guidance on how foreign investors can meet the "net benefit" threshold to get their deals approved.

A LESSON FROM UNOCAL

CNOOC's failed Unocal bid in 2005 initially led to three years of sparse Chinese investment in North America's oil industry. More recently, however, the deal-making has roared, albeit without new major U.S. company takeovers by Chinese rivals.

While China has also struck deals to gain access to reserves in politically unstable countries including Yemen, Venezuela and Sudan, North America remains the top foreign destination for energy spending by Chinese firms.

Dealogic figures show CNOOC's proposed takeover of Nexen is just one of a record nine North American energy deals announced by Asian energy giants this year, totaling $22.8 billion. Most have been promptly approved.

In January, China Petrochemical announced a buyout of oil and gas assets from Oklahoma-based Devon Energy in a transaction worth $2.4 billion. The deal closed within four months.

China is keen to participate in North America's technology-driven shale drilling boom, which could help it tap vast shale reserves back home. U.S. shale production has added more than a million barrels a day to domestic output over the last five years and turned the country into the top natgas producer.

In Canada, state-owned Chinese oil firms, including CNOOC, have invested some $8.7 billion in oil and gas firms since 2009, mostly in oil sands projects.

"Asian investors are committed to work towards exporting Canada's energy to Asia, so they are particularly motivated," said Sarah Emerson of Energy Security Analysis Inc. (ESAI) in Boston.

CANADA'S BARGAINING POWER

The lure of Canada's energy reserves can hardly be overstated. Unlike its southern neighbor, there is little political opposition in Canada to energy exports.

Canada is expected to almost double its oil and gas output over the next 25 years, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA).

The country's vast tar sand deposits have reserves of 170 billion barrels of oil, trailing only Saudi Arabia and Venezuela. Canada already pumps more than 3.7 million barrels per day of oil - around 5 percent of world supplies - and it's the No. 3 natural gas producer, with more than 60 trillion cubic feet of conventional natural gas reserves. Canada's untapped shale gas reserves could be six times larger, the EIA says.

Canada wants to ship more to Asia in part because U.S. import demand has stagnated due to lower fuel consumption and higher domestic output. The U.S. buys nearly 99 percent of Canadian energy exports.

In many respects, Ottawa has time and bargaining power on its side.

"There's a lot of money out there looking for a stable country like Canada to invest in. The Canadians could go a long way without Asian capital if they wanted to," said Mikkal Herberg, research director for energy security at the National Bureau of Asian Research in Washington.

Canada needs new pipelines, ports and natural gas terminals to ship fuel to fast-growing Asia rather than selling more to the United States. Energy exports are already limited by pipeline bottlenecks into the United States.

"They face capacity constraints to get the stuff out," said Colorado-based energy consultant Phil Verleger. "So Canada may be looking at this scenario and saying, 'hey, we don't have to rush'."

Good news for Samsung this morning, as a preliminary U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) ruling has declared that Apple's "rubber band" scrolling patents invalid. According to reports from TNW and FOSS Patents, the ruling isn't yet set in stone, but it means that, for the moment, 20 patent violation claims against Samsung relating to patent no. 7,469,381 no longer stand. Crucially, FOSS Patents says, this includes one claim involved in Apple's recent courtroom victory against the Korean manufacturer.

The USPTO is reported to have found evidence of prior art in some cases, and in others the inventions were deemed to have been obvious.

The "rubber band" scrolling feature can be found throughout Apple's range of iOS and OSX devices, though Samsung has long since pulled the feature from its Android-based smartphones.

As with everything relating to the on-going litigation between Samsung and Apple, and the wider patent wars, this is not yet finalized. Nevertheless, if things proceed in this direction, it could be helpful to Samsung's appeal in the high-profile California case.

Rumor: New Nexus tablet to have higher resolution display than iPad

1 day

Lately rumors are a penny a dozen when it comes to Google's Nexus phone and tablet lineup, but one in particular certainly caught our attention: An analyst claims that the next Nexus tablet will be a 10.1-inch beast with a higher resolution display than the current iPad model.

According to CNET's Brooke Crothers, Richard Shim, an analyst at NPD DisplaySearch,?says that the pixel density on Google's next tablet will leave that of the "Retina" display found on the third-generation 9.7-inch iPad in the dust.

This new Nexus tablet, apparently?built by Samsung, would have a?2,560?x?1,600 pixel?display with a resolution of 299 pixels per inch (PPI), according to Shim.?The iPad, in comparison, has a 2048 x 1536 pixel display with a resolution of 264 PPI.

(Both?Samsung and Apple have?phones with higher pixel densities than this, of course. The iPhone 5 screen has a 326 PPI, while the Galaxy S III offers 306 PPI.)?

Shim told CNET that the new Nexus tablet will be a "high-end device," so think $400 or $500,?rather than?the ?sub-$200 range of the Nexus 7 and the rumored $99 Google?tablet. Samsung, which already builds Google's current Galaxy Nexus smartphone, makes sense as the choice of partner.?

Shim bases all of his assumption on "supply chain indications," which, as we've learned in the past, are subject to change ??or occasionally totally wrong. So take all of these details with a hefty serving of salt until there's some sort of official confirmation or announcement from the folks at Google themselves.
